Our $ Dollar Sign Brand Makes Sense!
We have been raising Texas Longhorns since 1978 and are just as enthusiastic about this magnificent breed today as we were in 1978.
Meadowwood is located in the foot hills of the Wichita Mountains, near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, 12 miles north of Lawton, OK. Charley is a country florist and has been for nearly 60 years, semi-retiring in 2001. For several years the Safari B Ranch and the Doherty Ranch organized a registered Texas Longhorn Sale the day after the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Sale. This sale was proceeded by a Champagne Brunch. Pat Baker retained Charley to do the table and sale ring flower decorations. The Champagne flowed! When Charley had some champagne and saw the magnificent and docile animals he had to have one - and so our romance with the Texas Longhorn breed began.
We have 3 pastures - on the home place we have a separate pasture for our bulls. We also keep all our heifers here until they are 18 - 20 months old and then are exposed to a bull in his pasture. We normally do not AI our first calf heifers. We are fortunate to have a large number of various oak and pecan trees furnishing shade for the cattle in the hot Oklahoma summer months.
Our second pasture is 160 acres about 3-1/2 miles from the home place. Whelming Barry, our Whelming King son, has been the senior herd sire there for several years. This pasture has four ponds on it, is cross fenced and most of our hay is stored there. It also has quite a few trees for shade during the summer months.
Our third pasture is across the street from our second pasture - it is a lease of 240 acres. We currently have 585 Diamondback, owned in partnership with Sheldon & Patti Buxton, there as herd sire. When Diamondback goes to the Buxton’s we will put our junior herd sire M.W. Red Ranger a DH Red Ranger son there. As is so important, this pasture also has many trees for shade for the cattle.
Our breeding program has always been blended genetics from all of the major Texas Longhorn families, with emphasis on WR, Butler and Phillips. We believe single trait breeding is not for our program. A 2-1/2 to 3 year old cow with her first calf, good conformation, color and horns fits well into our program. Of course, more horn is definitely a plus.
Through 1990 most of our herd was purchased from Dr. and Mrs. L.V. Baker, Safari B Ranch, Elk City, OK and from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. During the last 15 or so years we have expanded our herd by Private Treaty purchases and from various registered Texas Longhorn auctions adding genetics from other breeding programs.
Note: All of our pedigree information is saved in the Portable Document Format [PDF] file format which requires Adobe Reader to view. If you don't have the Adobe Reader program, click on the image below to get it. It's free. Thank you.
